Useful Information

Therapy works when there is a relationship that feels reliable, boundaried and safe. In psychodynamic and analytic work, we explore together how earlier experiences and relationships continue to shape how you feel, think and relate in the present — often in ways that aren’t immediately obvious, and that can show themselves in the relationship we develop together. Below I list some of the ways we establish a working relationship that will allow for this change.

Starting out

After we have made contact, I will always suggest an initial consultation, which gives us an opportunity to see how we might work together and for you to see if this would suit you. We might first have a brief Zoom call (which I won't charge for) to say hello before arranging this. Then we will have a six-session 'settling in' period, which will help us identify some of the themes you want to explore and give you a good sense of what ongoing work would be like.

Fees

My fee is £70 a session. I increase my fee from time to time but not usually within a one-year period. I will explain how and when I invoice when we meet.

Frequency

Psychodynamic therapy is most effective when we can meet regularly and frequently. A good balance is to meet once a week although occasionally I can both increase this and decrease the frequency where it makes sense.

Client agreement

After our 'settling in' period we may contract to work together. This will usually be once a week for an open-ended period. Although you are not tied into a timeframe through our agreement, I do encourage a period to end where we can review our work together. This is often a very helpful phase of the work. I will discuss my client agreement with you when we meet, including my policy on cancellation.

Confidentiality

I treat your identity and what you tell me with all due professional confidentiality in line with the law and the codes by which I am regulated (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the British Psychoanalytic Council).

In person vs online

I mostly work in person in Cheltenham in an old building on the second floor, unfortunately without a lift. This presents some accessibility issues. I do however work online as well, mostly as a way of continuing the work when you might be away, but also if you decide you want to work with me remotely. This involves a slightly different approach, which we would explore together to decide if it's right for you.
